Eskom said it is planning to cut power from a number of municipalities before Christmas day if the outstanding debts have not been settled.

In September Treasury showed figures that municipalities owed over R140 billion by households, with Johannesburg municipality owing the largest amount of R18 billion.

Eskom’s National Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said household power debts affect the municipalities which owe the power provider billions of rands.

“Eskom is still issuing letters to municipalities to let them know that electricity will be interrupted if the debt is not paid.

“The most recent example of power cuts would be a municipality called Thaba Tswewu. They have had power interruptions since 9 October.”

Phasiwe added that the next power interruption will be in eMalahleni municipality, which owes about R1.2 billion.
